How can we contribute to reduce the impact on the climate change from the design point of view?

There are several strategies and actions from which to contribute to this goal. The world of construction is changing. We have non-polluting materials that do not waste resources, we know about projects that integrate renewable energy production, we have healthy buildings, which through passive measures reduce energy consumption to a strict minimum, while ensuring greater comfort.

In this course we will explore and discuss about the ones that focus on the efficient management of the materials and techniques available in their context. Those that prioritise reuse, as well as the optimisation of materials available in the nearby area.

Rather than recycling (transforming waste into a new material that is then used as raw material to make another object) we talk about upcycling (transforming an object or place that has no use or was going to be thrown away into another product or place with added value and greater utility).  In other words: giving new life to places, materials and also to knowledge and know-how.

Based on this approach, we will critically analyse texts, experiences and case studies, and explore new possibilities for our context.

But beyond the analysis, we will design something for a real case by reusing available materials.

The course is organised in 3 stages:

1.     Concepts and criteria.  Text discussion and analysis of case study

2.     Material resources. City as "mine of raw materials".

3.     Material responses. Design Project.

The seminar takes place Monday afternoons.

The seminar starts on 24.11.
